Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain at 5,199m (Batian peak), and the highest in Kenya. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, it is an ancient extinct volcano that last erupted approximately 2.6 million years ago. Today its dramatic peaks, glaciers, and high-altitude moorlands draw trekkers from around the world, while its lower slopes are covered in rich montane forest teeming with wildlife.
The mountain offers several trekking routes, with the Sirimon Route (ascent) and Chogoria Route (descent) forming the classic traverse — widely considered the most scenic combination on the mountain. The trekking summit, Point Lenana at 4,985m, can be reached by fit trekkers without technical climbing experience. The mountain is home to unique high-altitude flora including giant lobelia and groundsels, and wildlife including elephant, buffalo, and colobus monkeys in the forest zone.
